Alison Flakes

Alison Flakes is a Buffalo native and graduate of Bennett High School and Buffalo State College where she earned a BA in Journalism. Alison earned a Masters of Social Work degree from the University at Buffalo, and is completing her doctoral studies at the University at Albany’s – School of Social Welfare. Her research interest is in the area of addiction, co-occurring disorders of mental health and substance abuse, criminal justice and the effect on children, families and women in recovery. Alison’s teaching philosophy includes a micro, mezzo and macro generalist perspective. Alison’s teaching experience includes courses in: practice research, grant writing, social welfare policy, human behavior, organizational behavior, administration and management, and human resource management. Alison is a Red Cross certified trainer for the New York State Department of Health, and has training experience in: grant writing, cultural competency, women’s focus groups, strategic planning, human resource management, co-occurring disorders of mental health and substance abuse, children and families coping with addiction and criminal justice involvement. Alison’s work history includes work with non-profits, private sector, SUNY research foundation and higher education. Alison currently is a Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at the University at Buffalo. |

Dr. Boyd is a graduate of University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and Medical College of Pennsylvania. He completed a Residency in Dental Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA and a Residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. He is currently Director of Outpatient Clinics, Director of Predoctoral Curriculum in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the State University of New York at Buffalo. |
| He has directed and presented numerous continuing education courses at the regional and international levels. Dr. Boyd is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is a Fellow in the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is a member of the New York State and Western New York Societies of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the National Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Dental Education Association, National Dental Association, American Medical Association and Omicron Delta Upsilon. Dr. Boyd an active member of the Medical-Dental Staff of Erie County Medical Center and Kaleida Health Hospitals. |
Dr. Betty Shadrick

Dr. Betty P. Shadrick has held progressively responsible positions in educational institutions, community-based and state government agencies. Applying her skills in teaching, counseling, and administration, she has worked to advance the well-being of the underserved, economically improvised, and aspiring pre-K, elementary and secondary high school youth; and undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, she is employed at University at Albany-State University of New York and is the director of the Office of Graduate Student Diversity. In this role, she administers the NSF (National Science Foundation) grant-AGEP-Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate, the Carson Carr Graduate Diversity Scholar, and designs numerous student-focused activities to improve the recruitment, retention and graduation of graduate students and, in particular, graduate students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Regularly, she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the School of Education and the Department of Africana Studies. |

Hon. Craig Hannah

In January 2006, Craig D. Hannah was appointed by Mayor Byron Brown as a Buffalo City Court Judge to fill the vacancy created by the election of Hon. Diane Devlin to the NYS Supreme Court. In November 2006, Judge Hannah was elected to this seat with close to 80% of the vote. Previously, he was an attorney in private practice with close to 10 years experience as a trial lawyer in our City, Stateand Federal Courts. His practice was concentrated primarily in the areas of personal injury and criminal defense litigation. Also, Judge Hannah was an Adjunct Professor at Medaille College where he lectured in Criminal Justice and Criminal Procedure. In addition, he is the co-instructor/lecturer for the City of Buffalo Youth Court. In January 2008, Craig was appointed to serve as an Acting Erie County Family Court Judge. A graduate of Canisius College and the University at Buffalo Law School, Judge Hannah began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Erie County District Attorney’s Office. As an ADA, he was assigned to the Buffalo City Court and the Grand Jury Bureaus. Further demonstrating his commitment to public service, Craig joined the City of Buffalo Law Department in 1999. For five years, he served with distinction as one of the City’s chief litigators in the Corporation Counsel’s Office and later served as legal counsel to then New York State Senator Byron Brown. |

David A. Milling, M.D. is an Associate Professor in Clinical Medicine, as well as the Associate Dean for Multicultural Affairs at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He is the program director for STEP (Science and Technology Entry Program) and director of the Post-Baccalaureate Program. He is also the Medical Director of the Clinical Competency Program at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Prior to medicine, Dr. Milling trained as a pharmacist. |

Dorothy Siaw-Asamoah, is an immigrant from the United Kingdom with Ghanaian ancestry. She is currently a first year Ph.D. student in the Communication department at the University at Buffalo. Before returning to school full-time to pursue her doctorate, she was the Assistant Director of Student Services/Academic Advisor in the School of Management Graduate Programs Office. In addition to providing academic advisement to all MBA & MS students, Dorothy embarked on interesting projects such as the popular Country forums during her tenure. This new venture enabled MBA students to share with their peers and faculty the rich cultural diversity represented in the UB MBA program. She received her BS in Business Administration (magna cum laude) in 2003 & MBA as an Arthur A. Schomburg Fellow in the UB School of Management. |

Ms. Elizabeth Colucci AGEP Coordinator

Elizabeth Colucci has served as the Project Coordinator of the NSF funded SUNY AGEP Program at UB since Fall 2005, when SUNY AGEP began Phase II of the grant. The AGEP program is under the jurisdiction of the Graduate School, working with UB’s STEM departments to increase the number of underrepresented minority students pursuing doctoral degrees and subsequent faculty careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Ms. Colucci is responsible for a comprehensive program of recruitment, retention, advisement and programming for the AGEP project at UB. The goal of UB’s AGEP program is to enrich the academic experience of the AGEP students, connect them with important information and resources, and build a community of scientists. AGEP provides services, activities and supplemental funding designed to support underrepresented students interested in, or currently pursing, graduate study in a STEM field at UB and subsequent careers in the professoriate. |

Hadar Borden has worked at the University at Buffalo as fellowship and scholarship advisor since 2004. She handles all the external awards that require institutional endorsement with the exception of the Fulbright Program. She is the Administrative Director of the Undergraduate Academies. Prior to joining the Undergraduate Academies, Hadar was an Assistant Administrative Director in the Honors College and Assistant Director of Out of State Recruitment in the Office of Admissions. She earned both a B.A. and M.A. from UB in Geography with a concentration in International Business and World Trade in ’97 and ’01 respectively. |

Dr. Henry J. Durand serves as the Senior Associate Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education and the Executive Director of the Center for Academic Development Services (CADS) at the State University of New York at Buffalo. There are 11 different programs that fall under the CADS umbrella, these programs include grant funded support services, research and admission programs. Professor Durand is a member of the Graduate Faculty of the University at Buffalo, a UB Senator on the SUNY Faculty Senate and a member of the UB Faculty Senate Executive Committee. |

He teaches for the Graduate School of Education. He is the President of the Tri-State Consortium of Opportunity Programs, and a founding member of Opportunity Programs United, the joint advocacy organization for NYS Opportunity Programs. Dr. Durand has received the SUNY wide Chancellor's Award for Professional Excellence. He has been cited as a distinguished alumnus of Denison University. He has been listed by Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Black America, and Who's Who in Training and Development. He holds a B.A. from Denison University, M.Ed. from Xavier University of Cincinnati, the Doctorate from the University of Cincinnati, and is a graduate of the Harvard Management Development Institute. |

Jennifer M. Hess is an Assistant Dean and Director of Admissions in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University at Buffalo. Previously, she was an Associate Director, Assistant Director, and Senior Admissions Advisor in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and has worked in admissions for 10 years. Her work has included serving as data custodian, overseeing application processing, supervising staff, program planning, scholarship coordination, and territory management. Dr. Hess has served as an Assembly Delegate and Membership Co-Chair for NYSACAC, University Center Representative for SUNYCAP, and is a member of NACAC. She has presented at many regional, state, and national conferences, is a recipient of the SUNYCAP Admissions Profession Award, has lectured in UB’s Graduate School of Education, and holds a doctoral degree in social foundations of education. |

Dr. Jennifer L. Schaffstall is a Clinical Research Specialist for the Center for Wound Healing Research at Daemen College. She received her Bachelor’s in Physical Therapy and Masters of Exercise Science from the University at Buffalo and Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Daemen College. As a physical therapist and mentor for over 10 years, she has worked in a variety of clinical settings including acute care, rehab, geriatrics, and schools treating children with disabilities. Dr. Schaffstall has worked in wound care for the past 3 years and is currently conducting an international clinical trial to study the effects of topical oxygen treatment for healing wounds. |
Judith Robinson, PhD

Research interests of Dr. Judith Robinson include questioning behaviors, the reference interview with children, and access to federal government information. She wrote Tapping the Government Grapevine: A User-Friendly Guide to U.S. Government Information Sources and coauthored Subject Guide to U. S. Government Reference Sources. She delivers online workshops about accessing federal government information, and has presented "How to Use the Federal Register" for the U. S. government, “Government Documents for Dummies” for the New York Library Association, and “Future Colleagues: Documents Education in Library and Information Science Programs,” at the Annual Federal Depository Library Conference. She is a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. |

Kimberly J. Jackson, a Native Buffalonian, is the Assistant Dean for Strategic and Enrollment Planning at Buffalo State College (SUNY). She is responsible for the planning and implementation of effective policies and procedures related to advancing the mission of the Graduate School. Her key roles are to provide leadership in the areas of graduate enrollment and retention through the development and management of activities related to student recruitment and retention, admissions, marketing, and graduation. She also serves as the Program Coordinator for Individualized Studies, Multidisciplinary Degree Program where she is responsible for advising individuals with unique professional and educational objectives not readily met by traditional master’s degree programs. Jackson’s previous higher education experiences include graduate recruitment for St. Bonaventure University’s Buffalo Center campus and minority student recruitment for Hilbert College. |

Kristine Kasbohm is the Information Literacy Coordinator at Canisius College of Buffalo. She teaches research skills, trains librarians to teach, and serves on the Core Curriculum Committee. She was a reference and instruction librarian at Niagara University for five years before coming to Canisius. She has a Masters of Library Science from the University at Buffalo. She also has a Masters from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and has taught History at Erie Community College. Before entering the field of librarianship, Kristine worked in Human Services staffing and supervising residential facilities for people with disabilities. |

| Clark has an extensive history in human resource management.He has served as a manager of corporate recruiting. He also has held similar positions as Human Resources Representative at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, Minnesota and Andersen Windows in Bayport, Minnesota. Clark earned a Bachelor of Arts in Human Resources Management and a Masters of Arts in Organizational Management with an emphasis on Human Resources from Concordia University, St. Paul, Minnesota. |

Dr. Stewart received his Associate in Arts degree in sociology, from Bishop State Community College in 1977, a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology from Tuskegee University in 1979, and Master of Arts degrees in sociology and African American studies from The Ohio State University, in 1982 and 1983, respectively. In 1990 he earned a Ph.D., sociology, from Howard University, Washington, D.C. During the summer of that same year, he served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Office of the Vice President for Health Affairs at Howard University, researching the causes of high infant mortality rates among Blacks in the United States. In September of 1990 he joined the faculty at Buffalo State. His publications include a book titled African American Husbands: A Study of Black Family Life, and an array of articles with a focus on African American men. Currently, he is working on an article that examines the preference for hiring Black women over Black men in corporate America. |

A native of the southside of Chicago, Rochon is currently serving as the Dean of the School of Education and Associate Vice President for Teacher Education at Buffalo State College in Buffalo, New York.Prior to this he was employed at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse as the Director of the Research Center for Cultural Diversity and Community Renewal (CDCR) and Director of the Master of Education Professional Development Program (MEPD). |

Rochon obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Sciences from Tuskegee University and his Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with an emphasis in reproductive physiology. After working at the University of Chicago within the reproductive unit of the hospital, he developed an interest in teaching and obtained a Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.One of Rochon's primary areas of interest centers around the recruitment, retention, and successful matriculation of culturally, linguistically, and racially diverse students. He is also involved in various area activities and groups and strives to strengthen the relationship between the community and university. With the partnership of a colleague, Rochon established the University of Wisconsin's CDCR office and acquired over $3 million in federal grant funds to direct a Hmong Teacher Education program. In addition, he coordinated an exchange program between the University of Cape Coast (Ghana) and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s International Education department. Rochon has a passion for teaching and learning. He has instructed both undergraduate and graduate students within the school of education in courses that address the historical and contemporary perspectives surrounding the politics of race and culture within American society. His primary focus is assisting students in examining and deepening their understanding of the ways in which socio-cultural factors influence American educational thought, theory, and practice. Rochon's research agenda is grounded within a historical context that examines trends among African Americans with respect to their feelings, attitudes, and perspectives toward ethnic and national identity. His work also investigates the current educational curriculum controversy regarding multiculturalism, as well as the role of public schools in addressing questions of ethnic identity. As a life-long learner, Rochon's intensive work with students in K-12 settings, and throughout the community, consistently reminds him of the necessity of systemic community building and empowerment paradigms.

Sarah Watson, a native of Western New York, is an Admissions Advisor for the Graduate School of Education (GSE) at the University at Buffalo. In addition she is currently a Master’s Student in the Educational Leadership & Policy Department’s Higher Education Administration program, expecting to graduate in May of 2009. In 2004 she earned her Master’s of Library Science at UB and was a public librarian for three years. Having had so much experience applying to graduate school (with success!) she is more than happy to assist students in their pursuit of higher education. The GSE offers over 80+ programs in the four departments of Counseling, School and Educational Psychology, Educational Leadership and Policy, Learning and Instruction and Library and Information Studies. |

Susan Muchshima Moynihan is an Assistant Professor and the Director of the Master’s Program in the Department of English at the University at Buffalo (SUNY). Her research and teaching, at the graduate and undergraduate levels, focus on Asian American literature, comparative ethnic literature, autobiography studies, the affective dimensions of literary texts, and representations of trauma due to war and colonialism. Before graduate school, she worked for the National Braille Press, a nonprofit organization in Boston, Massachusetts. |
Tara Jabbaar-Gyambrah, Ph.D.

Tara Jabbaar-Gyambrah, an African-American scholar, and teacher, is an academic advisor in the Academic Challenge and Enrichment Program at the University at Buffalo. She received her Ph.D. from the University at Buffalo’s American Studies program specializing in Women Studies and has done extensive research in Ghana in 1998, 2001, and 2002. In addition, she has a background in Sociology, and African American Studies and has taught undergraduate courses on women, gender roles, popular culture, the black family, and the representations of black women in the media. As a researcher, mentor, and teacher, her primary research interests’ centers on understanding women’s |
| roles in relationship to the transatlantic and socio-cultural connections of hip-hop and hip-life music in the U.S. and Ghana, and exploring the identities of youth culture and Black peoples in the Americas, West Africa, and the Caribbean. |

Tony Torres is currently the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at the University at Albany School of Public Health. He is responsible for Admissions, Enrollment, Internships and Career Services for over 400 students in four degree programs MPH, MS, PhD and DrPH in four Academic Departments, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Biomedical Sciences, Environmental Health Sciences and Health Policy, Management and Behavior. He is also responsible for implementing a state funded program to increase the public health workforce (PHLOT). Prior to joining the School of Public Health Tony held positions in Multicultural Affairs, Career Services, Student Activities and for many years was the Director of the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP). |

Ms. Vonetta T. Rhodes is the Director of the Child Development Center at Niagara Community College. She has worked in the field of Early Childhood Education since 1994 at various community centers and programs, including UB Child Care Center and CAO Head Start Classroom Program of Erie County. As an educator and trainer, her focus is anti-biased curriculum, observation and assessment, and developmentally appropriate practice. Ms. Rhodes received a Baccalaureate Degree in Elementary Education and Modern Languages at SUNY/College at Old Westbury (1996) and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education and Language Arts at the University of Buffalo (1998). |
